Ministers from Southeast Asia and surrounding regions gathered in Jakarta for the second ministerial meeting of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) to discuss strategies for promoting zero-emission power generation, sustainable fuel markets, and next-generation manufacturing. The meeting highlighted the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting various approaches tailored to the unique circumstances of each nation. The 'AZEC principles' were emphasized, focusing on achieving a 'triple breakthrough' in addressing climate change, promoting economic growth inclusivity, and ensuring energy security. The AZEC framework, initiated by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, includes nine members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Australia, and Japan. Areas of cooperation include decarbonizing coal power generation through innovative resources like biomass, hydrogen, and ammonia, as well as supporting carbon dioxide capture and storage legislation. Sustainable fuel demand and supply roadmaps will be developed, particularly in the transport sector, while policies for decarbonization in industrial parks will be established. Japan's commitment to technology transfer and advocacy for carbon capture and storage legalization in partner countries indicates a positive step towards advancing the decarbonization agenda. The AZEC summit aims to expand beyond its current members and engage in broader international cooperation for a sustainable, zero-emission future.
