Transnational Effort: Hydrogen Pipeline Agreements Signed in Europe
Key Ideas
  • Gas TSOs from Spain, France, Portugal, and Germany have signed agreements on the BarMed Spain-France hydrogen pipeline and the CelZa Portugal-Spain interconnections.
  • The H2med project, named a European 'project of common interest', aims to connect the hydrogen networks of the Iberian Peninsula to France, Germany, and northwest Europe by 2030.
  • The project will enhance supply and demand for hydrogen, connecting industrial basins across Iberia and France.
  • Germany's participation in the H2med project reflects its interest in the hydrogen market and potential expansion to other markets.
Gas transmission system operators (TSOs) from Spain, France, Portugal, and Germany have recently signed agreements to advance hydrogen infrastructure in Europe. Enagás from Spain, joined by GRTgaz and Teréga from France and OGE from Germany, have initiated the BarMar project, a maritime hydrogen pipeline running from Barcelona to Marseille. This project aims to connect Spain and France and has received support from the respective TSOs. Additionally, Enagás signed a side letter with REN from Portugal to develop the CelZa interconnection between northeastern Portugal and northwest Spain. The agreements outline collaboration in feasibility studies and investment decisions, with equal contributions from Spanish and French TSOs. The H2med project, involving the BarMar and CelZa interconnections, is set to be completed by 2030, connecting the hydrogen networks of the Iberian Peninsula to France, Germany, and northwest Europe. The project is designated as a European 'project of common interest' and is expected to enhance the hydrogen supply and demand landscape while fostering industrial connections between Iberian and French basins. Germany's involvement in H2med showcases its strategic interest in the hydrogen market and its potential to serve various markets beyond its borders.
