ACWA Power to Produce Green Hydrogen in Tunisia for European Export
Key Ideas
  • ACWA Power has signed an MOU with the Tunisian Government to develop 2GW of hydrogen production capacity in Tunisia, starting with 200,000 tonnes per year.
  • The hydrogen will be exported through the SoutH2 Corridor to Italy, Austria, and Germany, with plans to begin operations by 2030.
  • TotalEnergies and Tunisia have formed a joint venture, TE H2, to develop project H2 Notos, aiming to produce 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
  • Tunisia has ambitions to produce 8.3 million tonnes of hydrogen a year by 2050, with 6.3 million tonnes being exported to the EU.
ACWA Power has entered into an agreement with the Tunisian Government to produce up to 600,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually in Tunisia for export to Europe. The project will be executed in three phases, with the first phase focusing on developing 2GW of hydrogen production capacity, aiming to produce 200,000 tonnes per year. The green hydrogen will be exported through the SoutH2 Corridor, connecting Tunisia to Italy, Austria, and Germany. TotalEnergies and Tunisia have also formed a joint venture, TE H2, to work on project H2 Notos, which plans to produce 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year initially. This initiative could potentially scale up to producing one million tonnes annually in the long term. The hydrogen will be generated using electrolysers powered by onshore wind and solar projects, with infrastructure utilization of the SoutH2 Corridor for export into Europe. Tunisia's national green hydrogen strategy aims to achieve a production capacity of 8.3 million tonnes per year by 2050, with 6.3 million tonnes earmarked for export to the EU.
