ARDAGH Glass Packaging-Europe has taken a significant step in advancing sustainable glass production by introducing green hydrogen at its facility in Limmared, Sweden. The company has deployed a 5MW PEM hydrogen electrolyser that uses renewable electricity to produce hydrogen for glass melting. Through the combustion of hydrogen produced onsite, Ardagh has managed to save 70 tonnes of CO2, contributing to emissions reduction efforts. The successful testing phase has demonstrated that integrating green hydrogen into the energy mix of the furnace has had no adverse effects on glass quality or furnace performance. The company's goal is to ultimately replace 20% of the natural gas used in the furnace with green hydrogen, further enhancing its sustainability practices. This development comes in the wake of AGP's introduction of the NextGen Furnace in Germany, where a significant portion of electrical heating has already been achieved. By incorporating green hydrogen and other sustainable technologies like hybrid melting, Ardagh Group aims to support its sustainability objectives and help customers meet their emissions reduction targets.
