Germany and Australia have announced a groundbreaking energy cooperation with a joint commitment of €400 million to the H2Global hydrogen auction. This initiative aims to establish global supply chains for cleaner fuels by facilitating the import and export of renewable hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia and methanol. The bilateral agreement allows Australia to participate in the H2Global scheme for the first time, paving the way for the establishment of renewable hydrogen shipping corridors to Europe. This partnership will bridge the price gap of renewable hydrogen products between the two regions, with the first sales auction planned for 2027/2028. The H2Global mechanism, led by the H2Global Foundation and Hintco, will play a crucial role in accelerating the energy transition by providing price signals and investment decisions for clean fuel markets. The successful pilot auction, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, saw Fertiglobe emerge as the winning bidder. Fertiglobe will produce renewable ammonia for delivery in European ports starting in 2027, with volumes potentially increasing to 397,000 tons by 2033. Overall, this partnership marks a significant step towards establishing a global market for clean fuels and driving the adoption of renewable energy products.
