Axpo, in collaboration with Schätzle AG, EWA-Energie Uri, and SGV Holding AG, has started the construction of a hydrogen production plant in Bürglen, central Switzerland. The H2Uri-led project targets an annual production capacity of 260 tonnes of hydrogen, utilizing electricity from the EWA-Energie Uri hydropower plant. The installation is part of Axpo's energy diversification strategy and hydrogen development roadmap, aiming to reduce diesel consumption across various regional applications. The plant's focus is to supply the mobility and industrial transport sectors, with plans to convert the passenger vessel Saphir on Lake Lucerne to a hydrogen propulsion system. Additionally, Schätzle AG, operating a hydrogen refueling station in the region, is one of the customers for this production, enhancing regional supply structure. Axpo's strategic ambitions in hydrogen development include the Bürglen project and another upcoming plant in Wildegg-Brugg, Aargau. These infrastructures are crucial for meeting regional energy demands, securing supply, and advancing the hydrogen value chain. While Axpo faces challenges in the sector's growth due to economic and technical hurdles, its investments signal a strong commitment to driving the adoption of hydrogen in the Swiss market.
