Boeing and Norsk e-Fuel Collaborate for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Boeing partners with Norsk e-Fuel to accelerate the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Nordics and globally, aiming to reduce aviation emissions and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
  • Norsk e-Fuel's electro-SAF production using the Power-to-Liquids process can reduce air travel's greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% compared to conventional jet fuel, aligning with EU targets for increasing SAF use.
  • The collaboration combines Boeing's industry leadership with Norsk e-Fuel's technology expertise to drive the transition to e-fuels, supported by Norway's largest air carrier, Norwegian, and reinforcing the need for policy support for e-fuels production.
  • The strategic partnership advances the commercialization of SAF and aims to make sustainable fuels competitive with and eventually replace fossil fuels, emphasizing the importance of a robust SAF ecosystem for aviation decarbonization.
Boeing has entered into a strategic partnership with Norsk e-Fuel to support the development of one of Europe's first industrial-scale Power-to-Liquids (PtL) facilities in Oslo, Norway. This collaboration aims to accelerate the production and availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Nordics and globally, with the goal of reducing aviation emissions and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 as per the common objective of the commercial aviation industry and ICAO member states. Norsk e-Fuel will produce electro-SAF, or e-SAF, through the PtL process, involving the use of fossil-free power to create green hydrogen and combining it with recycled CO₂ from biogenic sources. This innovative fuel can significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of air travel by over 90% compared to traditional jet fuel. The initiative aligns with the RefuelEU SAF mandate to increase the share of SAF in Europe, targeting 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050, with specific sub-mandates for e-SAF, including those produced by Norsk e-Fuel. Boeing's investment will play a crucial role in meeting the SAF volume requirements outlined by the EU commitments and enhancing national energy security in the Nordics. By leveraging Boeing's expertise in the SAF industry and Norsk e-Fuel's technology know-how, the partnership aims to drive the transition to e-fuels and make sustainable fuels competitive with and eventually replace fossil fuels. This collaboration is supported by Norwegian, Norway's largest air carrier, highlighting the significance of policy support in realizing the potential of e-fuels production. The positive sentiment surrounding this partnership emphasizes the importance of building a robust SAF ecosystem to facilitate the decarbonization of the aviation industry.
