Boosting Europe's Hydrogen Economy: IPCEI Hy2Move receives €1.4 billion support from 7 countries
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission approves Hy2Move, a €1.4 billion IPCEI backed by 7 countries to boost hydrogen research and innovation.
  • The project aims to create 6,500 new jobs by 2031 through 13 innovative projects focusing on hydrogen applications in mobility and transport.
  • Hy2Move complements previous projects in the hydrogen value chain and is expected to leverage €3.3 billion in private investment.
  • Companies like Airbus, Gen-Hy, Hydrogène de France, and Michelin are part of the initiative, which will develop technologies for hydrogen production and fuel cells.
The European Commission has approved the Hy2Move project, the fourth Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), aiming to enhance research, innovation, and industrial deployment in the hydrogen value chain. Backed by seven Member States - Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, and Spain - the project will receive €1.4 billion in public funding, with a potential leverage of €3.3 billion in private investment. This initiative will involve 11 companies, including SMEs and start-ups, undertaking 13 innovative projects that could lead to the creation of 6,500 new jobs by 2031. The focus of Hy2Move is on various applications in mobility and transport, encompassing the integration of hydrogen technologies in different means of transport like road, sea, and air. Additionally, the project will work on developing high-performance fuel cell technologies to power ships and locomotives, as well as on-board storage solutions for hydrogen and hydrogen production technologies for mobility, including refuelling stations. Notable companies like Airbus, Gen-Hy, Hydrogène de France, and Michelin are partaking in this IPCEI. Hy2Move is part of a series of projects in the hydrogen value chain, following Hy2Tech, which concentrates on end-user technologies, Hy2Use, focusing on industrial applications, and Hy2Infra, which deals with infrastructure investments. The project is set to advance the hydrogen economy in Europe and drive innovation in the sector, creating a positive outlook for the future of hydrogen technologies.
