Collaborative Green Hydrogen Project in Algeria for European Market
Key Ideas
  • Cespa and Sonatrach signed an MOU to conduct a feasibility study for a green hydrogen production project in Algeria aimed at the European market.
  • The project will involve two phases: feasibility assessment and profitability studies in the first phase, followed by project development.
  • The integrated project includes electrolysis hydrogen production, renewable energy supply from solar and wind plants, methanol and/or green ammonia production, and necessary infrastructure.
  • The initiative aligns with the decarbonization goals of both companies and highlights a collaborative effort towards sustainable energy production.
Cespa from Madrid, Spain, and Sonatrach from Algiers, Algeria, have recently announced a partnership to explore the development of a green hydrogen production project and its derivatives in Algeria. The focus of this collaboration is mainly to cater to the European market's demand for green hydrogen. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) outlines a detailed plan to conduct a feasibility study for the project, with the ultimate goal of contributing to sustainability and decarbonization efforts. The envisioned project will be executed in two distinct phases. The first phase will involve extensive studies to determine the project's viability, potential opportunities, and economic feasibility. Following the successful completion of the initial phase, the second phase will concentrate on the actual development of the green hydrogen project. The comprehensive project plan includes the establishment of an electrolysis hydrogen production facility, utilizing renewable energy sources like solar and wind power to supply the necessary energy for electrolysis. Additionally, the project will encompass the construction of a plant for methanol and/or green ammonia production. To support the commercial viability of the project, infrastructure for storage, transportation, and other essential facilities will also be developed. This collaborative effort between Cespa and Sonatrach signifies a significant step towards sustainable energy production and underscores the shared commitment towards decarbonization and environmental responsibility.
