EET Launches Europe's First Hydrogen-Ready CHP Plant in UK
Key Ideas
  • Essar Energy Transition (EET) announces the establishment of Europe's inaugural hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant at Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port, UK.
  • EET's investment of USD 3 billion in energy transition initiatives in the North West of England includes the completion of the EET Hydrogen Power project by 2027.
  • The project aims to enhance EET Fuels' standing as a low carbon process refinery globally and EET Hydrogen's position as a top low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK, while aiding other industrial users in achieving decarbonisation goals.
  • EET Hydrogen Power, a 125 MW capacity plant, will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tonnes annually and play a pivotal role in the decarbonisation strategy of Stanlow refinery, targeting a 95% cut in emissions by 2030.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has unveiled plans for Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant (CHP) at its Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port, UK. The project, named EET Hydrogen Power, is part of EET's larger USD 3 billion investment in energy transition initiatives in the North West of England, with a targeted completion date set for 2027. This initiative not only supports EET Fuels' goal to become the lowest carbon process refinery globally but also positions EET Hydrogen as a leading low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK. The plant will also provide low carbon power to aid regional industrial decarbonisation efforts. EET Hydrogen Power is slated to become an independent vertical under EET and will be developed in two phases to achieve a capacity of 125 MW, ultimately reducing 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. By replacing the existing boiler units at Stanlow, which currently generate around 50MW for refinery operations, the new plant will play a vital role in the decarbonisation strategy of EET Fuels' Stanlow refinery, aiming to slash total emissions by 95% by 2030. Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of Essar Energy Transition, emphasized the significance of EET Hydrogen Power in advancing the UK's low carbon energy agenda and showcasing the pathway to decarbonising high emitting industries globally.
