Erdemir and Linde Collaborate on Groundbreaking Hydrogen Injection Trial in Turkish Steel Sector
Key Ideas
  • Erdemir, in partnership with Linde, will conduct a two-day hydrogen injection trial at its blast furnace, aiming to accelerate its decarbonisation goals.
  • The project, supported by Erdemir Engineering, will make Erdemir one of the three steel producers in Europe implementing this process.
  • Following Cleveland-Cliffs' successful hydrogen injection trial in North America, this initiative highlights a global shift towards using hydrogen as a reductant and fuel source in steel production.
  • The collaboration between Erdemir and Linde signifies a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly steel industry in Turkey.
Turkish steel company Erdemir is set to embark on a groundbreaking two-day hydrogen injection trial at its first blast furnace in collaboration with Linde, a global industrial gases and engineering company. This trial, scheduled for October, is expected to be a pioneering move in the Turkish steel sector, positioning Erdemir as one of the three steel producers in Europe to implement such a process. With Linde's support and Erdemir Engineering's expertise, hydrogen will be injected into blast furnace No.1 from five tuyeres, aiming to contribute to Erdemir's 2050 decarbonisation goals. This initiative follows a similar successful trial conducted by Cleveland-Cliffs at its Indiana Harbour blast furnace, marking a significant step towards using hydrogen as a reductant and fuel source in steel production. The involvement of Linde in both projects underscores the importance of collaboration and innovation in accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly steel industry. The global steel sector is evidently moving towards adopting hydrogen as a key element in its decarbonisation journey, reflecting a positive shift towards greener practices and energy transitions.
