EU Approves IPCEI Hy2Move Project to Boost Hydrogen Innovation and Deployment in Transport Sector
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission has approved the IPCEI Hy2Move project to support hydrogen innovation and deployment in the transport sector, contributing to the EU's climate goals.
  • Seven Member States will provide €1.4 billion in public funding, expected to unlock €3.3 billion in private investments, creating around 3,600 direct jobs.
  • The project focuses on developing technologies for hydrogen integration in various transport modes, high-performance fuel cells, on-board hydrogen storage, and hydrogen production for mobility applications.
  • IPCEI Hy2Move complements previous IPCEIs on the hydrogen value chain, with a completion timeline by 2031 and a commitment to knowledge sharing and positive spill-over effects across Europe.
The European Commission has approved the IPCEI Hy2Move project, the fourth Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), aimed at supporting research, innovation, and the initial industrial deployment in the hydrogen value chain to facilitate the reduction of emissions from the mobility and transport sectors. The project aligns with the EU's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and supports the objectives of the European Green Deal, the EU Hydrogen Strategy, and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy. The initiative, jointly prepared and notified by seven Member States including Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia, and Spain, will see public funding of €1.4 billion, expected to leverage an additional €3.3 billion in private investments. The IPCEI Hy2Move project will involve 11 companies, including SMEs and start-ups, working on 13 innovative projects covering various aspects of the hydrogen technology value chain. The project's focus includes the development of hydrogen technologies for integration in transport means like road, maritime, and aviation, high-performance fuel cell technologies, on-board storage solutions for hydrogen, and technology for hydrogen production at refueling stations. It is anticipated that the project will create around 3,600 direct jobs and numerous indirect employment opportunities, with a completion target set for 2031. The European Commission assessed and approved the IPCEI Hy2Move project under EU State aid rules, ensuring that it aligns with the objectives of the EU Green Deal and other key strategies. The project is seen as crucial for supporting breakthrough innovations, overcoming market failures, and ensuring fair competition. Additionally, the project aims to share its outcomes with the wider scientific and industrial community in Europe, fostering positive spill-over effects across the continent.
