Six European and Algerian energy companies have come together to evaluate the feasibility of a major green hydrogen production initiative in Algeria and its subsequent transport to Europe via the 'SoutH2 Corridor' project. The ambitious plan involves a 3,300-kilometre hydrogen pipeline that is designed to connect North Africa with key European countries like Italy, Austria, and Germany. The project has the potential to contribute significantly to Europe's hydrogen import goals, aiming to meet 40 percent of the target by 2030. The collaboration includes renowned companies such as VNG from Germany, SNAM from Italy, Sea Corridor from Italy, VERBUND from Austria, and Algerian energy giants Sonatrach and Sonelgaz. Together, they will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the technical and economic viability of the green hydrogen value chain, spanning from production in Algeria to the transportation network extending across Europe. This partnership expands on a previous agreement between VNG and Sonatrach and signifies a deeper commitment to advancing cooperation in the clean energy sector. Furthermore, the joint efforts between Germany and Algeria to establish a bilateral hydrogen task force underline the shared commitment to enhancing collaboration in clean energy, demonstrating a positive outlook towards sustainable energy solutions in the region.
