European Commission Opens Applications for Cross-Border Renewable Energy Projects Funding
Key Ideas
- European Commission is accepting applications for CB RES projects to access funding from CEF for Energy, aiming to promote renewable energy adoption and cross-border cooperation.
- Projects demonstrating cross-border cooperation between EU Member States or between EU Member States and third countries are eligible, with a focus on renewable energy generation and electrolyzers.
- CEF for Energy has funded 14 CB RES projects, including wind, hydrogen, and district heating projects, with a total of EUR 90 million awarded.
- Latest awards include projects like Utilitas Lode-Penuja RES Wind park in Estonia and Latvia, United Heat project on the German-Polish border, and Cicerone-Ammonia project in the Dutch Port of Rotterdam.
The European Commission has opened applications for cross-border renewable energy project (CB RES) recognition to access funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Energy. The program aims to integrate state and regional power and natural gas infrastructure to create a single market. Projects eligible for CB RES status must demonstrate cross-border cooperation between EU Member States or between Member States and non-EU countries. While some power and hydrogen grid projects are ineligible, those focusing on renewable energy generation, energy storage, and electrolyzers linked to renewables generation facilities may qualify. The CEF for Energy has funded 14 CB RES projects with a total of EUR 90 million. Recent awards include projects like Utilitas Lode-Penuja RES Wind park in Estonia and Latvia, United Heat project on the German-Polish border, and Cicerone-Ammonia project in the Dutch Port of Rotterdam, aiming to establish a cross-border renewable hydrogen value chain. Prospective projects can apply until January 7, 2025, for the fourth call of CB RES status applications.
