Almost 20 European companies from France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain have come together to form the H2Med Southwestern Hydrogen Corridor alliance with the goal of creating a European hydrogen single market. The alliance seeks to expedite the development of a hydrogen pipeline that will link production centers in Spain and Portugal to consumers in northern Europe by the early 2030s. The network, which includes major developments like HY-FEN and H2ercules Network South, plans to have interconnections between Portugal-Spain and Spain-France with hydrogen capacities of 0.75 mtpa and 2 mtpa, respectively. The developers anticipate a total investment of €2.5bn for the project, with EU funding playing a crucial role in financing it. The initiatives within this corridor have already been recognized as Projects of Common European Interest (PCIs). The alliance aims to leverage the renewable energy potential of Spain and Portugal and to establish a market for green hydrogen in northwestern Europe. By uniting leading European companies, the alliance aims to drive the energy transition, scale up production capacities, and create a trans-European hydrogen ecosystem. The network is expected to benefit from the high renewable energy resources in Spain and Portugal while catering to the industrial market for green hydrogen in northwestern Europe.
