EU's €600 Million Funding Boost for Crucial Energy Infrastructure Development
Key Ideas
  • The European Union has launched a funding call of €600 million under the CEF to support cross-border energy projects, with a focus on hydrogen infrastructure, electricity, and CCS.
  • 65 hydrogen projects are included in the list of PCIs and PMIs, indicating a strong commitment to building a pan-European hydrogen network for clean energy transport and utilization.
  • The funding opportunity, open until September 16, 2025, aims to accelerate the development of strategically important infrastructure projects and contribute to achieving the EU's climate and energy targets.
  • Commissioner Dan Jørgensen highlighted the importance of intensified energy investments to strengthen the Energy Union, improve energy security, and reduce energy costs for all EU citizens.
The European Union has unveiled a significant step towards enhancing its energy infrastructure by announcing a €600 million funding call under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). This initiative, managed by the Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), is geared towards backing crucial cross-border energy projects, specifically focusing on hydrogen infrastructure alongside electricity and carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. The funding, open to Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) or Projects of Mutual Interest (PMIs), aims to expedite project development through streamlined permitting and regulatory processes. Notably, the funding call places a strong emphasis on hydrogen infrastructure, with 65 hydrogen projects identified in the latest list of PCIs and PMIs. These projects span across Western, Central Eastern, South Eastern Europe, and the Balkans, forming the basis of a comprehensive hydrogen network in Europe. This network is vital for facilitating the transport and utilization of clean hydrogen, aligning with the EU's ambitious climate and energy objectives. The funding opportunity will run until September 16, 2025, offering project developers a window to submit proposals for critical infrastructure enhancements. Energy and Housing Commissioner Dan Jørgensen stressed the urgent need for increased energy investments to reinforce the Energy Union, boost energy security, and lower energy costs for EU citizens. The CEF Energy program, with a substantial budget for 2021-2027, serves as a key financial mechanism in advancing crucial energy infrastructure projects. By promoting cross-border initiatives, the program aims to enhance energy security, foster market integration, and facilitate the transition to clean energy. Projects designated as PCIs or PMIs not only stand to receive potential funding but also benefit from expedited permit granting and improved regulatory treatment under the TEN-E Regulation.
