FUTURA HyCASA: Transforming Southern Africa's Energy Landscape with Green Hydrogen
Key Ideas
- Stellenbosch University and the University of Groningen are collaborating to establish FUTURA HyCASA, a research hub focused on sustainable energy technologies and green hydrogen in Southern Africa.
- The initiative aims to create a state-of-the-art campus for research, interdisciplinary collaboration, skills development, and incubating hydrogen-focused start-ups to boost the hydrogen sector and curb brain drain.
- Professors from both universities emphasize the transformative potential of the center, likening it to a 'moonshot' that can significantly impact the green hydrogen landscape in the region.
- The collaboration is part of the Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence in Renewable Energy, aiming to train 50 PhD applicants annually and capitalize on Southern Africa's solar resources for green molecule production.
Stellenbosch University (SU) and the University of Groningen (UG) have announced a strategic partnership to establish FUTURA HyCASA, a cutting-edge research and innovation hub dedicated to sustainable energy technologies and green hydrogen in Southern Africa. The facility is set to be located near Stellenbosch, a key position along the Europe-Southern Africa green energy corridor. The initiative led by Prof Cristina Trois of SU's CRSES and SASEC aims to create a campus with advanced research facilities, promote interdisciplinary research in renewable energy and hydrogen, provide skills development programs for professionals and students, and support hydrogen-focused start-ups to drive economic growth. The initiative, referred to as a 'moonshot' by Prof Lorenzo Squintani of UG, is part of the CoRE-RE, focusing on training PhD students and leveraging Africa's solar potential for green hydrogen production. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards decarbonizing energy supplies and boosting the green hydrogen sector in Southern Africa.
