Green Hydrogen Partnership Between H2 Energy Europe and Ontras to Fuel German Industrial Sectors
Key Ideas
  • H2 Energy Europe and German TSO Ontras are collaborating to transport green hydrogen from Denmark to industrial customers in Germany through the hydrogen core network.
  • The partnership aims to determine technical and commercial requirements for delivering hydrogen to customers in Rostock, Berlin, Leipzig, and Eisenhüttenstadt.
  • The agreement aligns with Germany's hydrogen import strategy, with ambitions to meet a significant portion of hydrogen demand through imports by 2030.
  • The 1GW green hydrogen production plant in Denmark, approved for environmental considerations, is set to commence hydrogen production by 2028.
H2 Energy Europe and German transmission system operator (TSO) Ontras have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the transportation of hydrogen from a planned 1GW plant in Denmark to industrial customers in Germany. The collaboration aims to leverage Ontras' Green Octopus Mitteldeutschland (GO!) pipeline project and Germany's 9,700km hydrogen core network to deliver green hydrogen to customers in Rostock, Berlin, Leipzig, and Eisenhüttenstadt. The agreement signifies a significant step towards establishing a comprehensive hydrogen backbone for Europe, as stated by Ralph Bahke, ONTRAS Managing Director. Germany's hydrogen import strategy envisions a substantial portion of its 2030 demand being met through imports, aligning with the collaborative efforts of H2 Energy Europe and Ontras. H2 Energy Europe's 1GW green hydrogen production plant in Esbjerg, Denmark, has received environmental approval, bringing it closer to the final investment decision and the commencement of hydrogen production by 2028. Cyril Cabanes, CEO of H2 Energy Europe, expressed the intention to contribute to the development of an integrated and reliable hydrogen economy across Europe through the partnership with Ontras. The joint application by Ontras and EnBW for the establishment of the hydrogen core network, with an estimated investment of €1bn, demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing hydrogen infrastructure in Germany. This collaboration highlights the growing momentum towards green energy solutions and cross-border partnerships to drive the hydrogen economy forward.
