Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla expressed surprise at the level of interest in the areas designated for hydrogen exploration, particularly in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and other parts of the country. The bidding process includes areas in Zambales and Pangasinan, totaling over 200,000 hectares, with a deadline set for August 27. This initiative is part of the country's energy transition strategy, recognizing hydrogen as an innovative solution for future energy demands across various sectors. The Department of Energy established the Hydrogen Energy Industry Committee to oversee the implementation of a national policy framework and roadmap for hydrogen development. The unique approach of focusing on naturally occurring hydrogen has piqued the interest of European companies, with discoveries in Mali and France serving as precedents. While countries like Japan and China are emphasizing hydrogen manufacturing, the Philippines stands out for its emphasis on natural production.
