Honeywell Partners with Power2X for Green Hydrogen E-Fuel Project in Rotterdam
Key Ideas
  • Power2X selects Honeywell for a large-scale green hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel project in Rotterdam's Port.
  • The project will utilize Honeywell UOP's eFining™ methanol-to-jet technology and aims to produce e-fuels for regional airlines in Europe.
  • European regulations mandate an increasing use of sustainable aviation fuel, with a target of 80% by 2050.
  • Honeywell's technology uses green hydrogen and CO2 to produce SAF, aligning with European fuel mandates for the aviation sector.
Dutch-based Power2X has chosen Honeywell as the technology provider for its ambitious sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and e-fuel project in the Port of Rotterdam. Honeywell's eFining™ methanol-to-jet technology will be employed at the 250,000-tonne per year plant, utilizing locally produced and imported green hydrogen, along with biogenic CO2-based methanol, as feedstocks for the e-fuels. The project aims to produce e-methanol from hydrogen and CO2, which will then be converted into eSAF to fuel regional airlines in Europe. European regulations, particularly the ReFuelEU Aviation mandate, require an increasing use of SAF, with a target of 80% by 2050. Honeywell's Sustainable Technology Solutions boss emphasized the need for more sustainable aviation fuel to decarbonize the aviation sector, praising the use of hydrogen and CO2 in the production process. While no set date for construction or commissioning has been announced, Power2X's CEO sees the collaboration with Honeywell as a significant step towards producing SAFs in Europe.
