  • The expansion of hydrogen-powered buses in Cologne signifies a significant step towards sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation in Europe.
In early September, HomeSolaris began the delivery of articulated hydrogen buses to Regionalverkehr Köln GmbH (RVK) in Cologne, Germany. This marked the introduction of the first eight Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen buses into the city's public transit system. The buses are part of a larger order placed in September the previous year for a total of 18 vehicles, emphasizing the growing partnership between the two companies. With this delivery, RVK's hydrogen bus fleet, which already included 46 Solaris hydrogen buses, is expanding further. Solaris is currently fulfilling an additional order for 20 hydrogen buses, bringing RVK's total to 84, making it the largest hydrogen bus fleet in Europe. The newly delivered articulated buses feature a 100 kW fuel cell system and can be refueled with over 50 kilograms of gaseous hydrogen stored on the roof. These buses also boast a modular drive system that enhances passenger capacity by eliminating the need for a traditional engine compartment. Additionally, the buses are equipped with advanced air conditioning, monitoring systems, and passenger information systems, enhancing the overall passenger experience. The initiative to incorporate more hydrogen buses into Cologne's public transport system signifies a positive step towards sustainable and eco-friendly mobility in the region. The growing presence of hydrogen-powered buses not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes the adoption of renewable energy sources in the transportation sector. With further deliveries planned, the expansion of the hydrogen bus fleet in Cologne showcases a commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility in urban transportation.
