A team of researchers from Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) in Russia has introduced a novel approach to produce hydrogen directly in gas reserves. By converting methane thermocatalytically, the researchers demonstrated the feasibility of generating a significant amount of hydrogen within gas reserves. This method involves injecting air or oxygen into the well followed by ignition, leading to the production of syngas with high hydrogen content through the reaction between natural gas and steam with the support of a pre-injected catalyst. The hydrogen is then extracted through a membrane filtration process. In parallel, industry players like Plug Power and CPH2 have achieved significant milestones in the hydrogen sector. Plug Power has secured certification for its high-powered stationary system, enabling rapid deployment for various applications. Similarly, CPH2 has obtained a CE marking for its electrolyzer stacks, a crucial step towards commercial readiness. Additionally, nine gas transmission system operators in the Baltic Sea region have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on hydrogen infrastructure development. This collaboration aims to facilitate the growth of the hydrogen market and promote coordination in the region. Furthermore, Everfuel has submitted a project proposal for the development of a large-scale hydrogen production facility in Denmark, emphasizing the potential for hydrogen supply to industrial customers in Germany. These developments highlight the advancements in hydrogen technology and infrastructure, signaling a positive trajectory for the hydrogen sector.
