Microsoft has teamed up with ESB to implement a pilot project powering its data centre power control and administration building in Dublin with hydrogen fuel cells. This initiative, supplying up to 250kW of energy over eight weeks, marks a milestone as the first use of hydrogen fuel cells in a Microsoft data centre in Europe. Described as 'zero emission', these cells produce no carbon emissions or pollutants and convert green hydrogen into electricity, generating pure water as a byproduct. The partnership aims to replace diesel generators at data centres with sustainable hydrogen technology. Microsoft's EMEA Regional Leader highlighted the potential of this green hydrogen project to advance sustainability in the tech sector and beyond if successfully scaled. The move aligns with Microsoft's broader renewable energy efforts, including wind and solar projects in Ireland, as well as exploring hydrogen power innovations.
