In a significant move towards renewable energy advancement, the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project took a step forward with the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDoI) in Rome. This collaboration between representatives from Germany, Algeria, Italy, Austria, and Tunisia aims to establish a direct pipeline connection for gaseous hydrogen, linking North Africa to key European countries. The ambitious project consists of five sub-projects focused on creating a green hydrogen supply chain. European transmission system operators are finalizing plans for the 3,250 km European segment of the pipeline, with a substantial portion to be repurposed from existing natural gas infrastructure, streamlining development. German support for the North African section highlights the project's potential, with a focus on leveraging renewable energy resources and supporting economic growth in the region. The initiative is expected to transport significant amounts of green hydrogen annually, contributing to the EU's climate objectives. Tunisia and Algeria have shown proactive engagement in the project, securing agreements and projects to enhance their hydrogen production capabilities.
