The new Hydrogen Guardrails Report highlights the urgent need to transition from fossil fuel-based hydrogen production to clean hydrogen as a key element in reducing emissions. It forecasts a significant rise in hydrogen demand by 2050, necessitating a shift towards renewable electricity and clean hydrogen production methods. The report outlines four key recommendations to steer the deployment of hydrogen: prioritize decarbonization of current hydrogen uses, focus on hard-to-abate sectors, relinquish incompatible sectors, and invest in research and development to bridge commercialization gaps. By categorizing sectors based on their dependency on hydrogen and the availability of alternative decarbonization solutions, the report proposes a strategic approach to deploying clean hydrogen effectively.
