Oman Pioneers World's First Liquid Hydrogen Corridor to Europe
Key Ideas
- Oman signs agreement to establish a commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor to Europe, connecting with the Netherlands and Germany.
- The corridor will facilitate the export of RFNBO-compliant liquid hydrogen from Oman's Port of Duqm to key European logistic hubs.
- Development includes the construction of the world's largest hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and export terminal in the Port of Duqm.
- Project aims to enhance Oman's national hydrogen targets and contribute to green hydrogen supply chain, emphasizing economic value and sustainability.
The Sultanate of Oman has signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to create the world's first commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor, connecting Oman to the Netherlands and Germany. The project, involving Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), will establish a route for RFNBO-compliant liquid hydrogen export from Oman's Port of Duqm to European destinations like the Port of Amsterdam and key logistic hubs in Germany, including the Port of Duisburg. At the core of this initiative is the development of a hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and export terminal in Duqm, which will be the largest of its kind globally.
OQ, Oman's energy transition enabler, will lead the construction of the hydrogen plant and related facilities in Duqm, utilizing the port's strategic location and renewable hydrogen developments. ECOLOG will provide maritime transportation vessels for efficient liquid hydrogen shipping. On the European end, the corridor will be supported by re-gasification import terminals in Amsterdam, enabling distribution to industrial off-takers in the Netherlands and Germany through various transportation modes.
The signing of this agreement reflects Oman's commitment to realizing its hydrogen ambitions in alignment with global demand and national priorities. The project not only focuses on large-scale hydrogen export but also emphasizes the broader vision for Oman's green hydrogen sector, aiming to create economic value through industrial diversification, infrastructure development, job creation, and capacity building. By positioning Oman at the forefront of the green hydrogen global supply chain, the corridor project is set to play a crucial role in the country's sustainable development and economic growth.
