Penspen to Assess Feasibility of Hydrogen Blend Transportation in TAP Pipeline for Europe's Sustainable Future
Key Ideas
  • Penspen has been awarded a contract by TAP to evaluate the possibility of transporting hydrogen blends through its existing natural gas pipeline to support Europe's decarbonisation efforts.
  • The project aims to assess the viability of introducing hydrogen blends into the TAP pipeline, a key component of Europe's energy infrastructure connecting Greece, Albania, and Italy.
  • Penspen's expertise in hydrocarbon projects is now being utilized to inform the development of future fuel infrastructure, including repurposing existing systems for hydrogen transportation.
  • The assessment of the TAP pipeline's readiness for hydrogen blends aligns with the EU's commitment to sustainability and innovation for a greener energy future in Europe.
Penspen, an international energy consultancy, has secured a contract from Trans Adriatic Pipeline AG (TAP) to conduct a feasibility study on transporting hydrogen blends through its existing natural gas pipeline. This initiative is significant for supporting Europe's long-term sustainability and decarbonisation goals in line with the target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The assessment by Penspen's UK-based engineering team will focus on reviewing TAP's above-ground installations, block valves, and compressor stations to determine the practicality of introducing hydrogen blends into the 877-kilometer pipeline. The TAP pipeline, forming part of the Southern Gas Corridor, plays a crucial role in connecting various regions and enhancing Europe's energy security by diversifying its supply sources. Penspen's experience in hydrocarbon projects is now being leveraged to facilitate the transition towards cleaner energy solutions, such as repurposing existing infrastructure for hydrogen transportation. The contract with TAP is a continuation of Penspen's recent hydrogen-related projects across the UK and Europe, including supporting gas operators in assessing the feasibility of hydrogen blends in their pipelines and contributing to the development of low-carbon hydrogen plants. The evaluation of the TAP pipeline's readiness to handle hydrogen blends not only signifies a step towards cleaner energy transportation but also aligns with the EU's commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability for a greener energy future in Europe.
