Safeguarding Our Seas: Genevos Leads Hydrogen Fishing Vessel Project in EU Consortium
Key Ideas
  • Genevos, a French leader, is part of the H2-SEAS consortium to develop a hydrogen-electric fishing vessel, promoting energy efficiency and zero emissions.
  • The project aims to meet EU's 2030 targets for decarbonization and biodiversity restoration in marine environments.
  • Results will contribute to the European Green Deal, enhancing understanding of decarbonization barriers and promoting greener fishing fleets.
Genevos, a French company specializing in integrating hydrogen technologies in the maritime sector, has been awarded European Commission funding to lead a project focused on developing a hydrogen-powered fishing vessel. This initiative, part of the 'H2-SEAS' consortium, involves collaborating with various partners from Latvia and Estonia. Genevos will design and deliver the energy system for the vessel, including marine certified hydrogen fuel cell power systems. The project's goal is to construct and demonstrate a 12m hydrogen-electric fishing vessel propelled by a 100 kW e-engine, showcasing its efficiency and environmentally friendly operation with zero emissions and low sound pollution. By deploying the prototype in three countries from 2026, the project aims to validate its resilience in harsh marine conditions. The project aligns with the EU's 2030 targets for decarbonization, biodiversity restoration, and climate-neutrality in marine environments. It aims to accelerate the adoption of greener technologies in small-scale fisheries to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, while also focusing on acoustic noise reduction. The outcomes are expected to support the European Green Deal and improve understanding of barriers to decarbonization in small-scale fisheries. Rebecca Sharp, CEO of Genevos, emphasized the company's commitment to decarbonizing the maritime sector and supporting EU's Horizon Mission for ocean restoration by 2030. The project, targeting the objectives of the HORIZON-MISS-2023-OCEAN-01-05 topic, contributes to Sustainable Development Goals, including Life below Water, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Climate Action. Overall, the project aims to protect and restore marine ecosystems and waters by the end of the decade.
