Tenaris is participating in the SafeH2Pipe Joint Industry Project (JIP) in collaboration with major steel and energy companies to develop guidelines for safe hydrogen transportation through European pipelines. The project, supported by the European Commission, aims to address the need for safe and cost-effective hydrogen transportation and storage for the future hydrogen-based economy. With an expected 23,000 km of hydrogen pipelines in the EU by 2040, the selection and qualification of appropriate pipeline materials are crucial. The project involves state-of-the-art engineering studies, testing, and a fitness-for-service approach to ensure the highest safety standards. Tenaris plays a strategic role as the Materials Supply Project Leader, examining samples from both new and old pipelines to characterize line pipes for hydrogen transportation efficiently. Recently, representatives from the participating companies gathered at Tenaris's seamless pipe mill in Dalmine, Italy, to review the project's progress. Full-scale tests will be conducted to observe how hydrogen affects linepipe performance in the presence of external defects, emphasizing the risks posed by accidental mechanical damage. This innovative approach highlights the commitment to ensuring safety and efficiency in hydrogen transportation.
