Italian consultancy and marine engineering firm RINA has awarded Saipem with two crucial certifications for their approach in evaluating the performance of subsea hydrogen pipelines. One of the primary concerns in transporting hydrogen through pipelines is the potential degradation of materials due to hydrogen exposure. In response to this challenge, Saipem has devised a comprehensive protocol to assess the performance of metallic materials and welds in the presence of hydrogen, ensuring the pipelines' compatibility during both the planning and operational stages. The Approval in Principle (AiP) and Technology Qualification certifications granted by RINA signify a significant milestone in the development of innovative technologies, opening avenues for further qualification processes and scalable methodologies.
