SALCOS® Progress: Groundbreaking for Europe’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plant
Key Ideas
  • Cornerstone laid for Europe's largest green hydrogen plant in Salzgitter, contributing to low-carbon steel production.
  • SALCOS® program aims for virtually carbon-free steel production with a 100 MW electrolysis plant using HydrogenPro technology.
  • ANDRITZ's role in the project highlights commitment to decarbonization and sustainable growth in the industry.
  • Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH targets 2033 for the completion of the conversion to virtually carbon-free steel production at their facility.
One of Europe's largest green hydrogen production plants is underway in Salzgitter, Germany, with the recent laying of the cornerstone. The 100 MW electrolysis plant, part of the SALCOS® program, will produce around 9,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for carbon-reduced steel production starting in 2026. The project, led by Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH and supported by ANDRITZ, signifies a significant step towards low-carbon steel production. The electrolysis plant will utilize HydrogenPro technology, aligning with the company's aim for virtually carbon-free steel production by 2033. Emphasizing the importance of government support in creating suitable conditions for green production, the stakeholders are committed to contributing to a climate-friendly steel industry. ANDRITZ's involvement reflects a strategic focus on decarbonization and sustainability, reinforcing its position as a global leader in providing innovative solutions for various industries.
