Shell and TenneT Collaborate on Europe's First Major Hydrogen Plant Connection in Rotterdam
Key Ideas
  • Shell and TenneT have signed an agreement to connect the first large-scale hydrogen plant to the high-voltage grid in Rotterdam.
  • Holland Hydrogen 1, a 200 MW electrolyser, will be connected to the Maasvlakte high-voltage substation, aiding in the region's sustainability goals.
  • A temporary connection will be established until a new 380 kV substation at Amaliahaven is completed by 2026, enabling a permanent connection for Shell.
  • The collaboration showcases a step towards a greener future, with a focus on renewable hydrogen production in an industrial hub like Rotterdam.
Shell and TenneT have recently signed an agreement to facilitate the connection of the first large-scale hydrogen plant to the high-voltage grid in Rotterdam. The project, named Holland Hydrogen 1, will house a 200 MW electrolyser on the Maasvlakte, marking Europe's first major hydrogen plant. This initiative aligns with Shell's sustainability efforts, aiming to make their Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam more environmentally friendly. To achieve this, a special hydrogen pipeline will link the plant to the Port of Rotterdam. Due to space constraints, a temporary connection will be established to the Maasvlakte 380 kV high-voltage substation until the construction of a new substation at Amaliahaven is completed by the end of 2026. Once operational, this new substation will provide a permanent and complete connection for Shell. The collaboration underscores a significant step towards a greener future, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy sources like hydrogen in industrial settings like Rotterdam. The agreement signed between Shell and TenneT signifies a milestone in promoting sustainable energy practices.
