The Spanish Government has granted Enagás approval to initiate the H2Med project, facilitating the expansion of hydrogen networks across Europe. The project, designated as a Project of Common Interest (PCI), will involve constructing, operating, and monitoring hydrogen infrastructure to link the Iberian Peninsula with France, Germany, and North-West Europe. H2Med is anticipated to transport 2 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually by 2030, representing 10% of Europe's projected consumption. Additionally, plans include potential connections to North Africa by 2040, enhancing export opportunities. Enagás, in collaboration with partners, has committed to developing the BarMar hydrogen infrastructure, featuring a maritime pipeline between Barcelona and Marseille. Spain's strategic focus on hydrogen aligns with its goal to enhance supply security and drive decarbonisation efforts. By leveraging its abundant solar PV, wind, and hybrid resources, Spain aims to position itself as a significant green hydrogen producer in Europe. The EU's approval of a substantial Dutch scheme to support renewable hydrogen production further underlines the momentum towards sustainable energy initiatives in Europe.
