The CEF Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) has allocated 72.7 million euros of EU funds to Spain for the development of alternative fuels infrastructure, including electric vehicle charging points, hydrogen generators, and port decarbonisation. Eight validated business projects will install 589 electric recharging points with varying outputs, build 26 green hydrogen charging stations, and work towards decarbonizing ports in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). These projects, involving companies from Spain and other EU countries, aim to boost sustainable and low-emission transport by mobilizing approximately 400 million euros of investment. The initiatives include increasing the number of refuelling and recharging stations for low-emission alternative fuels. Port electrification projects are also in progress in Barcelona, Valencia, and Gijón, with plans for ammonia supply infrastructure in Algeciras and methanol in Huelva. The call for funding alternative fuels projects has a substantial endowment of 780 million euros, with the European Commission launching the second phase. Projects are selected based on criteria like impact, relevance, and catalytic effect, with institutions, companies, and international organizations eligible to participate.
