TAP Pipeline Explores Feasibility of Hydrogen Blending with Penspen
Key Ideas
  • Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) has commissioned Penspen to assess the feasibility of integrating hydrogen blends into its existing infrastructure, following positive results from a 2021 study.
  • TAP aims to expand to hydrogen and renewable gases to promote sustainability and decarbonization in its region, aligning with Europe's climate neutrality goals.
  • The introduction of hydrogen by TAP is expected to drive investments in Southeastern Europe and open up various opportunities for hydrogen use.
  • Penspen has been actively involved in hydrogen readiness assessments and feasibility studies for gas operators in different countries, indicating a growing interest in hydrogen integration.
The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) has chosen Penspen, an energy consultancy, to evaluate the feasibility of introducing hydrogen blends into its existing infrastructure. This decision follows a successful study conducted in 2021 which yielded positive results. TAP is looking to expand its operations to include hydrogen and renewable gases as part of its strategy to enhance sustainability and promote decarbonization in the region. The aim is to ensure safe and sustainable hydrogen blending while maintaining operational safety and reliability. The 877-kilometer pipeline, which began operations at the end of 2020, connects the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Greek-Turkish border to southern Italy via Albania and the Adriatic Sea. TAP's Managing Director, Luca Schieppati, believes that the pipeline has the potential to significantly contribute to Europe's climate neutrality efforts. The European Union's requirement for gas infrastructure projects to enable a switch to 100% hydrogen aligns with TAP's strategy. Penspen's involvement in hydrogen readiness assessments extends beyond TAP, with recent projects in Latvia and Portugal among others. The consultancy's focus on enabling the introduction of hydrogen into major pipelines is expected to spur investments in Southeastern Europe and create numerous opportunities for hydrogen utilization. Despite facing challenges such as production from fossil gas, the slow development of hydrogen uptake, and the need for enhanced efficiency and economic viability, the integration of hydrogen into pipelines like TAP marks a significant step towards achieving long-term regional decarbonization. The collaboration between TAP and Penspen signifies a proactive approach towards embracing green hydrogen and advancing the energy transition.
