TotalEnergies Acquires Stake in OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm for Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
- TotalEnergies acquires a 50% stake in RWE's OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands to produce green hydrogen for decarbonising refineries.
- The project will generate approximately 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, helping TotalEnergies reduce 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually by 2030.
- OranjeWind will not only produce green hydrogen but also contribute to grid stability with electric boilers and battery storage, pioneering system integration in the Dutch market.
- Construction of the wind farm is set to begin in 2026, aiming for full commissioning by early 2028, to serve as a blueprint for the future Dutch energy system.
TotalEnergies has acquired a 50% stake in RWE's OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands, currently in development. This partnership enables the production of green hydrogen to decarbonise TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe. The project, expected to yield 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, will facilitate a significant reduction of 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year by 2030. The OranjeWind project, located 53km off the Dutch coast in the North Sea, is a collaborative effort between the two energy companies to promote renewable energy and address climate change. Additionally, apart from producing green hydrogen, the wind farm will contribute to the stability of the Dutch grid through electric boilers and battery storage, marking it as the first system integration project in the Dutch market. The project aims to serve as a testbed for innovative technologies like offshore floating solar, subsea lithium-ion batteries, LiDAR power forecasting systems, and a subsea hydro storage power plant. Scheduled for construction commencement in 2026 with a target of full commissioning by early 2028, the project plans to revolutionize the Dutch energy system and align with decarbonisation goals.
