TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Partner to Develop Green Hydrogen Projects in the Netherlands
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have signed agreements to produce 45,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually in the Netherlands using renewable power from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm.
  • The collaboration aims to reduce CO2 emissions from TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000 tons a year, contributing to European renewable energy targets.
  • A joint venture between the companies will build and operate a 250-MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery, aiming to produce 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually and cut CO2 emissions by 300,000 tons a year.
  • These projects align with TotalEnergies' goal to reduce its annual CO2 emissions by around three million tons by 2030 through the use of green hydrogen across its European refineries.
French companies TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have joined forces to develop green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands. The collaboration includes two initiatives that will produce and deliver industrial levels of green hydrogen, totaling about 45,000 metric tons per year. This green hydrogen will be generated using renewable power from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm. By utilizing carbon-free energy generation, the projects are set to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands. One of the key aspects is a joint venture to construct and manage a 250-MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery. This facility aims to produce up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually and help in cutting CO2 emissions by 300,000 tons per year by its commissioning in 2029. The entire investment for these projects is around $627.02 million and includes seeking financial support from European and national subsidy programs. Additionally, TotalEnergies is working on reducing its CO2 emissions by approximately three million tons by 2030 through the deployment of green hydrogen in its European refineries. This effort involves contracts for over 170,000 tons of green hydrogen yearly at various locations across Europe to facilitate full decarbonization of hydrogen usage. The companies involved are demonstrating a commitment to carbon neutrality and supporting Europe's efforts towards decarbonized growth.
