TotalEnergies, a French oil major, has unveiled plans to explore a renewable energy project in Morocco aimed at producing hydrogen and ammonia for export to Europe. The project, known as the Chbika project, will involve the development of 1 gigawatt of onshore wind and solar farms near Morocco's Atlantic coast. The generated renewable electricity will be used to extract hydrogen from desalinated seawater and produce 200,000 metric tons of ammonia annually for European export.
This initiative is seen as the initial step in establishing a large-scale green hydrogen production hub. Besides reducing the greenhouse gas footprint in fertilizer production, renewable ammonia also shows promise as a low-emissions marine fuel. Furthermore, it is being explored as a chemical carrier for transporting hydrogen due to its easier liquefaction compared to hydrogen gas.
The project aligns with the European Union's Green Deal objectives, which include importing 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen by 2030. TotalEnergies' CEO, Patrick Pouyanne, emphasized the company's strategy to expand production in regions with competitive renewable resources.
