TotalEnergies Secures Green Hydrogen Supply Deal with RWE in Germany
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and RWE signed a 15-year contract for the supply of 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually starting in 2030, the largest agreement of its kind in Germany.
  • Production will be by a 300 MW electrolyser in Lingen with transport via a 600-kilometre pipeline, aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions at the Leuna refinery by 300,000 tonnes.
  • TotalEnergies' industrial strategy includes replacing grey hydrogen with green hydrogen across its European refineries by 2030, with over 200,000 tonnes already secured in various countries.
  • The partnership aligns with both companies' efforts in offshore wind and signifies a strategic move in the oil and gas industry amidst changing regulatory landscapes and the growth of the European hydrogen market.
TotalEnergies has finalized a significant 15-year deal with RWE to supply 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to its Leuna refinery in Germany starting in 2030. This partnership stands as the most extensive agreement for green hydrogen from an electrolyser in the country. The green hydrogen will be generated by a 300 MW electrolyser to be developed by RWE in Lingen, with transportation facilitated through a 600-kilometre pipeline for seamless integration at the Leuna site. The move from grey hydrogen to green hydrogen production is expected to lead to a substantial reduction of 300,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually at the refinery. TotalEnergies has set a target to wholly substitute grey hydrogen with green hydrogen in its European refineries by 2030 and has already secured more than 200,000 tonnes of decarbonized hydrogen for its operations in France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. This agreement with RWE complements their previous collaborations and underscores a strategic shift towards renewable energy sources and emissions reduction in the oil and gas sector, particularly in response to the evolving regulatory environment and the burgeoning European hydrogen market.
