BHEL and BARC's Collaboration for Green Hydrogen Production in India
Key Ideas
  • BHEL and BARC have signed a technology transfer agreement for the development of electrolyser systems focused on hydrogen production in India.
  • The agreement involves transferring technology for the Mixed-Matrix Membrane Diaphragm, a key innovation by BARC, to replace traditional asbestos-based diaphragms in electrochemical cells.
  • This collaboration aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and Make in India initiative, aiming to advance the localisation of alkaline electrolyser systems.
  • BHEL sees this adoption of indigenous technology as a strategic move to strengthen its position in the green hydrogen value chain and the clean energy sector.
Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) have entered into a technology transfer agreement to collaborate on the development of electrolyser systems focused on hydrogen production in India. This partnership is a significant milestone in India's clean energy journey, supporting the government's initiatives such as the National Green Hydrogen Mission and Make in India. The agreement specifically revolves around the transfer of technology for the Mixed-Matrix Membrane Diaphragm, an innovative component created by BARC. This membrane is set to replace traditional asbestos-based diaphragms in electrochemical cells, offering a cost-effective and locally developed alternative to the imported Zirfon diaphragms currently in use. By incorporating this indigenous technology, the collaboration aims to boost the localization of alkaline electrolyser systems in the country. BHEL anticipates that embracing this technology will not only establish the company as a key player in the green hydrogen value chain but also elevate its presence in the clean energy domain.
