EET Launches Europe's First Hydrogen-Ready CHP Plant in Stanlow, UK
Key Ideas
  • EET announced the launch of EET Hydrogen Power, the first hydrogen-ready CHP plant in Europe to be constructed at Stanlow refinery by 2027.
  • The investment aims to make EET Fuels the lowest carbon process refinery globally and EET Hydrogen the leading low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK.
  • EET Hydrogen Power will have a capacity of 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, reducing 740,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
  • The project is part of EET's $3.0 billion energy transition initiatives in the North West of England, supporting decarbonisation plans and creating high-skilled employment.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has introduced a groundbreaking project by launching EET Hydrogen Power, Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant at Stanlow refinery in the UK. The plant, expected to be completed by 2027, will play a significant role in supporting EET Fuels' target of becoming the world's lowest carbon process refinery and positioning EET Hydrogen as a leading low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK. The initiative will not only provide low carbon power to industrial users in the region but also contribute to reducing carbon emissions by 740,000 tonnes per year. EET Hydrogen Power, with a capacity of 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes of steam per day, will replace existing boiler units at Stanlow, enhancing the refinery's operational efficiency and environmental impact. Additionally, this investment forms part of EET's broader $3.0 billion energy transition efforts in the North West of England, showcasing a commitment to decarbonisation and the growth of skilled employment opportunities.
