Gensol Engineering and Matrix Gas & Renewables Partner for India's First Green Steel Facility
Key Ideas
  • Gensol Engineering and Matrix Gas & Renewables collaborate to develop India's inaugural green steel production site using 100% green hydrogen.
  • The project, supported by the Government of India, aims to achieve sustainable steel manufacturing through the use of green hydrogen, eliminating CO2 emissions.
  • The facility will utilize direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology to convert iron ore into sponge iron, representing a clean alternative to coal and natural gas.
  • Matrix Gas & Renewables aims to establish green steel plants across India, particularly in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, to cater to medium-to small-scale producers.
Gensol Engineering has entered into a partnership with Matrix Gas & Renewables, a key player in natural gas aggregation and green hydrogen, to embark on the development of India's inaugural green steel production facility. This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable steel manufacturing by utilizing 100% green hydrogen. The project, with an estimated total capital expenditure of Rs 321 crore, has received 50% capex incentives from the Government of India to bolster the transition to green steel production. The development of this facility aligns with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and has been sanctioned as one of three pilot projects under the aegis of MECON, in coordination with the Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. By employing direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology, the facility will convert iron ore into sponge iron without the use of coal or natural gas, thereby eliminating CO2 emissions for a cleaner production process. Matrix Gas & Renewables plans to tailor this green steel production process to suit Indian-grade ore, paving the way for the establishment of green steel plants catering to medium-to small-scale producers in various regions of India, including Chhattisgarh and Odisha. This strategic collaboration between Gensol Engineering and Matrix Gas & Renewables not only promotes sustainable steel manufacturing but also indicates a positive shift towards environmentally friendly practices within the steel industry.
