Gensol Engineering and Matrix Gas & Renewables to Pave the Way for India's First Green Steel Production Facility
Key Ideas
  • Gensol Engineering and Matrix Gas & Renewables partner to develop India's first green steel production facility using 100% green hydrogen, a milestone in sustainable steel production.
  • The project, with an estimated capital expenditure of Rs 321 crore, receives 50% capex incentives from the Government of India, aligning with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • The facility will employ innovative DRI vertical shaft technology to convert iron ore into sponge iron, reducing CO2 emissions by replacing coal and natural gas in the production process.
  • Matrix Gas & Renewables aims to expand the green steel plant model to support medium-to small-scale producers in various regions of India, promoting clean and environmentally friendly steel production.
Gensol Engineering has joined forces with Matrix Gas & Renewables, a key player in natural gas aggregation and green hydrogen, to establish India's pioneering green steel production facility. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable steel manufacturing by exclusively utilizing 100% green hydrogen. The project, requiring a total capital expenditure of Rs 321 crore, has garnered substantial support from the Government of India, which is providing 50% capex incentives to bolster the endeavor. Endorsed as one of the triumvirate pilot undertakings under the National Green Hydrogen Mission by MECON, the project operates in conjunction with the Ministry of Steel (MoS) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The facility's operational methodology incorporates direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology to convert iron ore into sponge iron, achieving emission reduction objectives by replacing coal and natural gas throughout the production cycle. Tailored for Indian-grade ore, this process is tailored to assist Matrix Gas & Renewables in establishing green steel plants tailored for medium-to small-scale producers in regions such as Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and various other areas across India, signaling a transformative shift towards sustainable and environmentally conscious steel production.
