Gensol Engineering to Establish Green Hydrogen Valley in Pune, India
Key Ideas
  • Gensol Engineering Limited and Matrix Gas & Renewables will establish a green hydrogen valley in Pune, Maharashtra, under a 20-year offtake agreement for the specialty chemical sector.
  • The project, developed on a build, own, and operate model, aims to contribute to India's green hydrogen economy with continuous supply to Pune's chemical sector.
  • The consortium has also secured the contract for India's first bio-hydrogen project, converting 25 tonnes of bio-waste daily into hydrogen, with plans to expand into green steel and green ammonia production.
  • Government support from the Department of Science & Technology and facilitation by National Chemicals Laboratories demonstrate a significant push towards hydrogen infrastructure development in India.
Gensol Engineering Limited, in collaboration with Matrix Gas & Renewables, has been granted the contract to establish a green hydrogen valley in Pune, Maharashtra. The project will operate under a build, own, and operate model, providing green hydrogen to Pune's specialty chemical sector for the next 20 years. Anmol Jaggi, the managing director of Gensol Engineering, emphasized the importance of the Indian government's backing for hydrogen valleys, facilitated by the Department of Science & Technology. This initiative aims to support India's green hydrogen economy by ensuring a consistent supply of green hydrogen to Pune. Chirag Kotecha, the whole-time director of Matrix Gas & Renewables, mentioned the role of the National Chemicals Laboratories (NCL) in supporting this project. The consortium's success as the lowest bidder for India's inaugural bio-hydrogen project is a significant achievement. This bio-hydrogen project plans to convert 25 tonnes of bio-waste into 1 million tonnes of hydrogen daily, with an estimated completion time of one and a half years. Gensol and Matrix are also looking to diversify their efforts in the green hydrogen sector by exploring opportunities in green steel and green ammonia production. The collaboration between these two entities signifies a strong push towards sustainable and renewable energy practices in India, supported by government initiatives and research institutions.
