The Ministry of Steel in India has been proactive in addressing emerging challenges in the steel sector, such as decarbonisation and the impact of the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. The government has engaged with stakeholders to develop a roadmap and action plan for the green transition of the steel industry. Notable policy initiatives include the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aimed at promoting green hydrogen production and its usage in steel manufacturing. Additionally, policies like the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy 2019 and Motor Vehicles Rules 2021 have been introduced to increase the availability of domestically sourced scrap for steel production, thereby reducing carbon emissions. The implementation of schemes like Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme under the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency further encourages energy efficiency in the steel industry. Union Minister Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy emphasized these initiatives in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, demonstrating the government's positive stance towards promoting sustainability and green practices in the steel sector.
