The Indian government has kickstarted five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to introduce hydrogen-powered buses and trucks in the country. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has sanctioned these projects, which encompass 37 vehicles - 15 hydrogen fuel-cell and 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine-based vehicles. Additionally, nine hydrogen refueling stations will be established as part of these initiatives. The pilot projects are slated to operate on ten varied routes, including popular stretches like Greater Noida-Delhi-Agra, Pune-Mumbai, and Bhubaneshwar-Konark-Puri. Leading companies in the automotive and energy sectors, such as TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, and Ashok Leyland, have been awarded contracts for implementing these projects. The government has allocated Rs 208 crore in financial support for these initiatives, with an expected commissioning timeline of 18 to 24 months. One of the key objectives of these projects is to facilitate the phased deployment of Green Hydrogen as a fuel source in buses and trucks. Through these pilot projects, the feasibility and viability of hydrogen-based vehicles and infrastructure will be evaluated in practical scenarios, providing valuable insights for scaling up such technologies. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, which commenced on 4th January 2023, has a substantial budget of Rs 19,744 crore earmarked until the fiscal year 2029-30, underscoring the government's commitment to promoting sustainable and innovative solutions in the transportation sector.
