Gowy Green Hydrogen Project at Stanlow: A Step Towards Decarbonization
Key Ideas
  • SSE and EET Hydrogen are collaborating on a green hydrogen production facility at Stanlow in the North West of England.
  • The Gowy Green Hydrogen project aims to supply hydrogen to industrial offtakers for decarbonization, supporting job creation in the region.
  • The UK has a target to deliver 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, with projects like Gowy Green playing a crucial role in achieving this goal.
  • The facility could be operational by 2028, with SSE and EET Hydrogen focusing on scaling up green hydrogen production to tackle hard-to-abate industries.
SSE and EET Hydrogen have joined forces to develop the Gowy Green Hydrogen project at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, UK. This initiative aims to establish a 40MWe green hydrogen production facility to supply industrial offtakers in the region, aiding in their efforts to decarbonize operations and contributing to job creation. The UK's target to achieve 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030 aligns with the goals of projects like Gowy Green, which play a vital role in transitioning towards cleaner power systems and enabling industries to reduce their carbon footprint. With feasibility studies completed and plans for a planning application in 2025, the project could be operational by 2028. The collaboration between SSE and EET Hydrogen signifies a commitment to advancing green hydrogen technologies and addressing the challenges posed by hard-to-abate industries in the region. Joe Seifert of EET Hydrogen and Hannah Bronwin of SSE expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its significance in the energy transition landscape and the pivotal role green hydrogen will play in achieving sustainability goals in the UK.
