Green Hydrogen Pilot Projects Launched in Steel Sector under National Mission
Key Ideas
- The National Green Hydrogen Mission in India has sanctioned three pilot projects in the steel sector to explore the use of hydrogen in steel production.
- These pilot projects aim to demonstrate the safe use of green hydrogen in steel production processes, validate technical feasibility, evaluate economic viability, and promote low-carbon production.
- Companies like Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd are among those selected to lead the pilot projects with government funding totaling Rs. 347 crores.
- The projects are expected to commence operations in the next three years, paving the way for further technological advancements in the Indian steel industry.
As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission in India, the Union Government has approved three pilot projects focused on utilizing hydrogen in the steel production sector. These projects aim to identify advanced technologies for harnessing green hydrogen in steel manufacturing through pilot initiatives. By demonstrating the safe operation of green hydrogen-based steel production processes, these projects will validate technical feasibility, assess economic viability, and facilitate low-carbon iron and steel production. Proposals were invited for three components: producing DRI using 100% hydrogen, utilizing hydrogen in a blast furnace to reduce coal/coke consumption, and injecting hydrogen in a vertical shaft-based DRI production unit. Based on evaluations of the received proposals, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has sanctioned three pilot projects in the steel sector. The selected companies include Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd with varying pilot plant capacities. The total government funding allocated amounts to Rs. 347 crores. These pilot projects are expected to be operational within the next three years, fostering the scaling up of such technologies in the Indian steel industry.
