Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Sukhu, has proposed converting the Kalka-Shimla UNESCO World Heritage train to run on green hydrogen. The state aims to become a green energy state by 2026 and is focusing on renewable sources like hydro, solar, and wind power. The government has outlined a six-pronged strategy to achieve this goal and align with India's climate commitments. The transition includes replacing thermal power consumption with renewables, with a target to achieve 90% renewable energy consumption in the power distribution network. The state is also emphasizing solar power generation, aiming to establish a capacity of 2,000 MW in the next few years. Additionally, initiatives like the 'Green Panchayat' scheme are promoting decentralised renewable energy by setting up solar power plants at the panchayat level. Himachal Pradesh is making strides in Green Hydrogen production, with plans for collaboration with Oil India Ltd and discussions for more facilities. The state is also focused on transitioning to electric vehicles, replacing buses and vehicles with EVs and developing green corridors for EVs. The government is supporting the deployment of environment-friendly vehicles within government services through grants for unemployed youth.
