India Boosts Green Hydrogen Production for Fertilizer Sector
Key Ideas
  • The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India aims to achieve a production capacity of five million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • To support the fertilizer sector, the ministry has increased the allocation under Mode 2A scheme by 2 lakh tonnes per annum, enhancing the capacity for green ammonia production.
  • The Solar Energy Corporation of India is facilitating the selection of green ammonia producers through a competitive bidding process, aligning with the mission's objectives.
  • The increase in allocation for green ammonia production signifies a growing demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives across various sectors in India.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India is actively pursuing the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) with the ambitious target of achieving a production capacity of five million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030. In line with this mission, MNRE has issued scheme guidelines for the implementation of the SIGHT Programme – Component II, specifically catering to the fertilizer sector under Mode 2A. The initial allocation for green ammonia production was set at 5,50,000 tonnes per annum, with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) facilitating the selection process for green ammonia producers through cost-based competitive bidding. As the demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives rises, MNRE has decided to enhance the allocation for the fertilizer sector by increasing the capacity to 7,50,000 tonnes per annum. This development is a significant step towards meeting the increasing demand for green hydrogen products in India, reflecting a positive momentum towards sustainable and renewable energy practices.
